The Iowa Department of Transportation is seeking a Transport Driver for the Iowa Department of Transportation Statewide Warehouse/Distribution Center. As a Transport Driver, you will provide Delivery and Transportation needs for a wide variety of inventory supplies and materials, and heavy equipment for our customers throughout the Iowa Department of Transportation, as well as over a thousand eligible external customers. You will work closely with the 15-person warehouse receiving, distribution, and transport team and others to ensure all seasonal and year-round inventory items as well as many special loads are delivered to our statewide customers as needed throughout the year.

Shift : Mon-Fri 7:00 am-3:30 pm is typical, with some variability or overtime due to load delivery requirements.

What youll do:


  • Operate tractor trailers, heavy-duty trucks, end loaders, tractors, van trailers, flatbeds, and lowboys to transport equipment, supplies, materials, heavy cargo, and special deliveries, etc.
  • Pack, load, secure, and unload required materials and heavy equipment in all types of weather.
  • Maintain all required paperwork and electronic records as needed for loads and deliveries.
  • Support Warehouse operations and the picking, packing, and loading of equipment and supplies utilizing computerized software systems, barcode readers, iPads, etc.
  • Provide customer support to DOT staff and others while delivering and picking up loads around the state.
  • Inspects tires, lights, and brakes checks fuel and oil levels performs and coordinates basic maintenance and emergency roadside repairs, etc.
Where youll work:
  • The Iowa DOT Ames Warehouse is over 24,000 sq. ft of interior storage with a large exterior storage area.
  • This position will work closely with the other Transport Drivers, Warehouse Receiving and Distribution Parts Workers, and Team Leads, all under the direction and leadership of the Warehouse Supervisor
  • Will work closely with all DOT customers statewide.

Additional Qualification Requirements
  • Positions in this class require a possession of a valid Commercial Learners Permit upon hire. Within a timeframe determined by the appointing authority, a valid Commercial Drivers License with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions must be obtained and subsequently maintained to continue employment.
  • Positions in this class are required to complete a pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in a random drug and alcohol testing program and will be subject to federal drug and alcohol testing regulations (in conjunction with Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations, parts 40 and 382).

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

1) Two years of full-time work experience in operating heavy trucks or tractor-trailers exceeding four tons.
2) A total of two years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where satisfactory completion of a truck driving program approved by the Iowa Department of Education from an accredited college or vocational school equals six months of full-time experience.
