Job Description :

This individual provides critical support to all members of a collegial research laboratory. The lab assistant will make multiple types of microbiological media and sterile stock solutions for researchers in the laboratory. The lab assistant will wash and sterilize glassware. The lab assistant will receive packages for the laboratory and put reagents and supplies away as needed. The lab assistant will order supplies for the laboratory, keep a detailed inventory, and organize the stockroom and other areas of the lab. The lab assistant will contact vendors about backordered items, and interface with technical support staff regarding equipment repair with guidance from laboratory members.

Department Description

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is a basic science department within the School of Medicine that performs scientific research, training and teaching at Mission Bay and Parnassus Heights. It is also the home department for the multidisciplinary UCSF Immunology Program and Microbial Pathogenesis Program. The fields of Microbiology and Immunology encompass many aspects of human health and a goal of our research is to further the basic understanding of microbes and the immune system, as well as translate this knowledge into improvement of human health. Research in the department focuses on areas related to infectious diseases, immunology, and cancer. Our department also provides advanced research training to Postdoctoral Fellows. Graduate students working towards their Ph.D. degree are enrolled in the Herbert W. Boyer Program in Biological Sciences (PIBS) or the Biomedical Sciences (BMS) Graduate Programs, depending on their research emphasis.

Required Qualifications

Lab Ast 2:
  • High school graduation and two years of laboratory experience, or two years of college, including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and one year of laboratory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to operate equipment (e.g. autoclaves, dishwashers).
  • Experience preparing media and stock solutions.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of computers for ordering and record-keeping purposes.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent demonstrated record of attendance and punctuality.
Lab Ast 3: In addition to the above
  • Three years of laboratory experience, or two years of college, including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and two years of laboratory experience or an equivalent combination of education/experience
